Exercise Physiology

Accredited exercise physiologists (AEPs) have tertiary level training equipped with the knowledge and skills to design, deliver and evaluate safe and effective exercise interventions for individuals who have diverse abilities and acute/chronic medical conditions and injuries (Exercise & Sport Science Australia [ESSA], 2018).

Your exercise physiologist will first complete a comprehensive assessment in order to design a safe and effective exercise management plan tailored for you to meet your goals. .

 

An exercise physiologist will also provide health education and will utilise behaviour change strategies in order to attain optimal, life-long health and goal-attainment.

 

 

Types of exercise interventions:

  • Aerobic exercise: swimming, cycling, jogging, walking, running, rowing etc
  • Strengthening exercise: bodyweight, machine, dumbbells etc
  • Balance: static and dynamic balance exercises
  • Flexibility/mobility: static stretching, specific exercise/s

 

Health-related outcomes:

  • Improve strength and/or fitness
  • Improve balance and reduce the risk of falls
  • Improve body composition (reducing fat mass and increasing muscle mass and bone density)
  • Improved mobility and flexibility
  • Better management of chronic condition/s
